£250K fine over London care home choking death A London Care Group has been fined £250K after pleading guilty to breaching its health and safety duties in respect of the November 2005 death of a 26-year old male patient who choked to death on a sandwich at a care home in London. The patient had a complex medical condition which featured a history of choking and was under the care of 2 agency workers when the accident occurred. The judge was critical of the care home manager who had earlier been fined £1,200 for breach of health and safety duties and deemed the whole incident "a case of profit before safety." HSE described the fine as "substantial" for its kind. This could have been prevented by ensuring adequate staff training in first aid, so don't let this happen to you!
